Living.fm was born from the team’s desire to be more deliberate about free time spent at home. Routines shape who we are, yet much of our behaviors—scrolling on social media, watching YouTube, reading the news—are driven by technologies designed to be addictive. The team hypothesized that self-awareness could be used as a source of friction to disrupt these defaults.
They created Living.fm, a personal narrator for your home. Liv, a smart device, plays background music overlaid with colorful, AI-generated commentary as you go about your routine. Liv is fully wireless, equipped with a Bluetooth speaker and battery-operated webcam, making it portable.
The team used three AI tools—Cursor, ElevenLabs, and LearningMachine—to design Liv as a responsive and engaging AI agent. With Cursor and ElevenLabs, they iterated on Liv’s narration content, tone, speech, cadence, and harmonization with the background music. Using LearningMachine, they captured an array of physical interactions, or “poses,” helping Liv tailor its comments to different scenarios and activities, such as yoga, cooking, or socializing
Privacy was a priority: Liv’s AI runs locally, ensuring no data leaves your device. Liv can be put to sleep at any time just by flipping over her watchful eyeball. The design—a megaphone combined with an eyeball—offers transparency about the device's main functionalities: to listen and to speak.
Initially, the team envisioned a device to combat “doom-scrolling,” but testing revealed this approach could become annoying. Broadening its functionality, they added positive reinforcement and music between comments. User interviews emphasized the importance of control and personalization, with participants wanting Liv to address specific activities while respecting privacy for others.
Living.fm invites you to tune in and discover how Liv can transform the way you experience your routines—making every moment at home more intentional and inspiring.
