KeyWe is a skittish key holder designed to encourage moments of calm upon leaving and returning home. Shaped like charming bird-like creatures, KeyWe adds a pop of color and personality that would look adorable in any entryway. Don’t scare them though! If the user is too loud or approaches super quickly the “beaks” will retract, dropping the keys to the floor. They’ll return in a few seconds, giving the user a chance to breathe and try again, and will wiggle a thank you of approval when the keys are placed gently.
This project explores how everyday objects can subtly influence daily behaviours. Inspired by the gentle approach necessary when approaching an easily startled creature, KeyWe features a retractable key hook “beak” that reacts to sound and movement. If startled, the hook retracts, preventing the user from hanging or retrieving their keys. This encourages a slower, more mindful interaction, transforming a routine action into a moment of calm.
KeyWe was developed through rapid prototyping and bodystorming, embracing iteration and experimentation to refine the interaction. Instead of relying on theoretical discussions, the team built and tested numerous physical models, learning through playful trial and error. By keeping the process hands-on, they uncovered valuable insights about engagement, frustration, and the joy of designing for behaviour.
KeyWe is a reminder that even the simplest daily routines can be reimagined with a touch of playfulness and charm.
