The team discovered that relying on digital tools for memory, like setting reminders on a smartphone, can lead to weakened memory retention. To empower individuals, they created a wearable device with AI that subtly reminds users of daily tasks, encouraging cognitive engagement.
Users can speak their tasks into the device, for example, “Water the plants and call Mum at noon”. The device then assigns a relevant sound to each task and utilises a built-in camera to trigger timely reminders based on the environment. This could involve playing a watering sound near a plant or a gentle chime at a specific time. The user can then try to recall the associated task. This device is ideal for people who want to become more self-reliant when it comes to task management.
The team plans to address potential privacy concerns and explore user customisation options in future iterations. Through developing this device, they learned the importance of balancing technology with human cognition!
