Garden of Generations

Cultivating Bonds, One Story at a Time

Garden of Generations is a low-fidelity digital app designed to foster emotional connections between grandparents and grandchildren through engaging prompts and interactive games. The app creates a platform for shared storytelling, encouraging stronger intergenerational bonds while preserving lasting memories. By generating weekly prompts, such as "If you could travel into the future or back in time, what would you choose and why?", the app facilitates meaningful conversations, allowing both generations to share their wisdom and experiences.

At the core of the app is a virtual garden, a gamification element, that grows as users interact. The more prompts they answer, the healthier and more vibrant the garden becomes, encouraging grandparents and grandchildren to connect regularly, deepening their relationships over time.

The project was inspired by in-person interviews with grandparents and grandchildren, which revealed a strong desire for emotional connection, particularly through games and shared experiences. Many elderly participants expressed a yearning to stay connected with their grandchildren, who in turn found value in learning more about their grandparents' lives.

Through user research, including focus group interviews and low-fidelity prototyping, the team focused on designing inclusive digital experiences for older adults but learned that the grandchildren were also vital to the design, as they would likely teach and encourage their grandparents to participate in the experience.
