Laban Movement for Design: Embodied Interactions, Emotions, and Design

Erik Dahl is an interaction designer and researcher who has been exploring the relationship between design, emotions, and embodiment beyond his day-to-day design practice through a series of workshops with the design community. With a background in anthropology, philosophy, and human-computer interaction, Erik worked in various design, research, and innovation consultancies for the first decade of his career and as an independent consultant for the second decade (www.dahl.studio).

This talk will explore the Laban Movement Framework (a dance framework defining human movement) and how it can be used to inform design decisions. Our environments are increasingly occupied by dis-embodied and mis-embodied interactions. Designers are often tasked with "designing for emotion" but many don't understand the building blocks of emotions. Using the Laban framework we can better understand the interplay between our own physicality and the embodiment we give to the objects we create and how this impacts our emotional experience through these embodied interactions at the level of sensations, not concepts. Bonus: If time and space permit, we will have the opportunity to explore some aspects of the movement framework together to viscerally and personally experience the connection between embodiment, movement, and emotions.
