Roll-e the Rescue Orb is an exploration into the questions: How aware are we of our surroundings? and How do we coexist with the tiniest organisms around us? This project focuses on slugs and snails, which are being killed in large numbers in the Astino Valley, Bergamo—a context that shaped the initiative.
The team sought to create an artifact that benefits small organisms, particularly slugs, while making a broader statement about cohabitation, responsibility, and respect for all forms of life. Drawing inspiration from three of nature’s treasures, the first prototype embodies this philosophy.
The device is designed to function using resources available in its local environment, specifically by detecting and protecting slugs. It identifies slug mucus trails, which contain pheromones, using embedded pheromone receptors. Initially dormant or in a "sleeping" state, the device activates when it senses the vibrations of human footsteps nearby. Once activated, it rolls toward the nearest slug, following its mucus trail, and shields the slug from potential harm.
The concept arose from extensive research into slug behavior and their interactions with human activity. The team adopted biological strategies by asking questions like: How does nature follow? How does nature signal? How does nature protect?
