Tom is, at heart and in profession, an inventor. Possessing a deep technical background in electronics, software, and engineering as a whole, he specializes in turning nothing into something, and something into something valuable.Leaning not just on his engineering background, but on a history of working with design, Tom creates unique technologies to fulfill design aspirations, or elucidates unique user experiences to give new technologies a meaning and a purpose. He has done this as a consultant, employed inside established companies and in his own start-ups.Tom currently leads research and development and new technologies for Jawbone, having arrived there via his own company, Pencil Technologies, developing Bluetooth mesh-networking communication products for the poorest in the developing world.Further back, Tom ran a research lab at the Banff New Media Institute and a cross-Canada design+engineering research network into future uses of mobile technology.
