Gabriella Levine is an interactive artist and hardware designer interested in the relationship between technology and ecology. She studied Biology and Piano at Cornell University and Oberlin College, then worked doing Cancer Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine before abandoning the lab for the outdoors to become a wildland fire fighter based in Oregon.Gabriella currently works as a Senior Hardware Engineer at Google[x], prototyping, designing, consulting and fabricating in X’s Design Kitchen.She graduated with a Masters degree from ITP at NYU. She creates sculptural and robotic works that mimic environmental phenomena and animal behavior. She is the co-founder of Protei (biomimetic robotic flexible-hull sailboats) and Director of Open-H2O, a global community developing ocean preservation technologies.Since 2010, Levine has exhibited work internationally at Ars Electronica (AU), Transnatural Festival (NL), Science Gallery at Trinity College (IE), 92Y Tribeca, Eyebeam Gallery, Internet Week NYC, MIT Media Lab, IAC Building Chelsea, V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media (NL), Pier 49 on the Hudson River, 319 Scholes Gallery, Maker Faire NY-Shenzhen-Beijing, FuseBox Festival, and soon TEKS Meta.Morf in Norway.She has recently received the 2012 Prix Ars Electronica Hybrid Arts Award, the NYU Task Force Green Grant for an outdoor installation in lower Manhattan called The Bellflower Project, was commissioned for a semi-permanent installation at landmark building 240 Central Park South called Transpiration, and just finished a residency at Instructables.She teaches at various New Media institutions, and has presented at Open Hardware Summit 2011, LucidNYC, and Exploratorium. Her work has been written up in CNN, Scientific American, InHabitat, Wired, NY1, and VICE.
