I'm a designer, urbanist, educator, and experienced leader, working across multiple industries and sectors. In particular, I work at the intersection of design, technology, and cities. I am Director of Melbourne School of Design, which is the graduate school in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. I joined from the Swedish government's innovation agency, Vinnova, where I was Director of Strategic Design. My previous leadership positions have produced acclaimed and influential projects, teams and organisations, ranging across built environment (Arup and Future Cities Catapult), education and research (University of Melbourne and Fabrica), government (Vinnova and SITRA), and media (BBC, Domus, Monocle). My projects take a holistic approach to multidisciplinary design combined with an acute reading of everyday technologies and infrastructures. The teams and organisations I've built and run take a similarly multidisciplinary design-led approach, balancing vivid tangible outcomes with deep research and coherent strategy. I've lived and worked in UK, Australia, Finland, Italy, and Sweden, and developed and delivered city strategy, urban development and digital product design projects worldwide. Key clients include Google, Ericsson, Punkt, British Land, Lendlease, Heathrow Airport, University of Melbourne, HS2, the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Library, and governments in Amsterdam, Melbourne, Stockholm, Manchester and London, amongst others. I'm a Design Advocate for the Mayor of London, and a member of the Board of Trustees for Participatory City Foundation.I have been Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Visiting Professor of Practice at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, a Visiting Professor at Design Academy Eindhoven, and an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University in Melbourne. I've taught studios and courses at other colleges all over the world. Amidst much published work, in academic journals, books and media, I wrote the influential ‘design playbooks’ “Dark Matter & Trojan Horses: A Strategic Design Vocabulary” (Strelka Press, 2012) and ‘Designing Missions’ (Vinnova, 2022). I regularly speak at major conferences and events, and have been writing about design, technology, cities and culture at the blog City of Sound, since 2001, which is lately at https://cityofsound.medium.com.
