Tangled Forest is a mixed reality installation for natural history museums that helps non-scientist visitors learn about endangered insects and their fragile ecosystems. The installation imagines a greenhouse where visitors explore the environment of Denmark’s endangered Maculinea alcon butterfly using live plants, augmented reality (AR) animations, and wireless audio with two channels. The installation, along with its website companion, were¬†carried out with input and inspiration from the digital collections team at the Natural History Museum of Denmark. It seeks to build on the museum’s existing efforts to find creative uses for digital archive imagery, and expand public awareness around the loss of our planet’s biodiversity.
