WEGOVERN
WeWork is a co-working start-up. It’s one of the “six most valuable private tech companies in the world”. It’s a “branded real-estate-arbitrage middleman that doesn’t own any offices”. It’s a (self-proclaimed) “capitalist kibbutz”. It’s a “convenient space-as-a-service provider.” It’s a “state of consciousness on its way to transform white-collar labor.” It’s a “trove of data for optimal office design”. It’s an “extended apparatus for tracking and control on behalf of our corporate overlords”. And it’s part of an incredibly ambitious, well-funded and all-encompassing speculative design narrative with unpredictable and potentially empowering reverberations for architects, labor activists and designers.
Nicolay Boyadjiev is an architect and design strategist based in Montreal and Moscow. He is working at the intersection of architecture, service design and platform urbanism, with his recent projects focusing on addressability and cognitive extraction at the urban scale. His design and conceptual work has received multiple awards and has been showcased in Volume, Moinopolis, Fast Company, and Architect Magazine. Nicolay is currently the Design tutor of The New Normal programme at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow.
When: Tues. September 18th 2018, 17-18.
