What is blockchain?

Blockchain is the next big thing, yet few seem to understand what it really is, and what it can really do. We have all heard about bitcoin, yet this cryptocurrency is just one example of what blockchain offers.

In truth, blockchain represents the next evolution of the internet. As we shift from the internet of information to the internet of value, we will all play a role in shaping how this evolution takes place, and the effects this revolutionary technology can have on the global economy, ecology and society.

In this workshop, we will explore blockchain, beyond the hype and narrow focus on cryptocurrencies, using design to delve into its tangible benefits, examine why decentralized technologies and governance are preferable, and look to design systems that deploy blockchain to derive the maximum benefits for society as a whole.

What you will learn:

  • a conceptual understanding of distributed ledger technology
  • practicing creativity with blockchain
  • an understanding of the potential and ramifications of blockchain
  • the benefits of the rapid iterative prototyping method
  • skills to convey ideas

How you will learn it:

This workshop is built around collaboration, and participants will be guided throughout the five days, accumulating knowledge and applying it. We will be marrying the best of design thinking with the key principles behind decentralized technologies like blockchain to work towards developing considered and appropriate novel applications.

Above all, students will benefit from a carefully curated applied programme, designed to demystify the blockchain, open up constructive dialogue, help you think like a designer, and practice creatively with a topic usually off limits to anyone apart from programmers!

Is this for you?

Yes, if you are interested in exploring the world of blockchain and gaining an understanding of its role and potential. This workshop is for everyone, and prior programming or design knowledge is not necessary. A series of videos and recommended reading (optional but highly recommended) will be provided for those who wish to prepare.

What do you need to bring to the workshop?

  • A laptop
  • A smartphone or camera

Enrol now: There is a maximum number of 20 places available for each workshop, first comes first served. Enrolment will be closed when the workshops are full.
