Fees and Payments
How much does it cost? The cost is $1250 per workshop. For more information check the page Fees
How do I pay? When you submit your application, you will be asked to pay the tuition amount in full via credit card or debit card. After you have completed the application form, you will be sent an email with a link to proceed to payment. The amount will vary depending on how many workshops you have signed up for. This automatically holds your place in the workshops but the application is completed when we receive your payment. If we don’t receive it the next 24 hours, your application will be canceled. Please note that there is a non-refundable deposit if you decide to not attend.
What if I don’t have a credit card or if the amount is too high for a single transaction? If this is the case, you can reply to the application confirmation email you will be sent after completing the application form online and we will send you an invoice so you can make a bank transfer. There may be additional costs associated with this method of payment, which should be paid by you.
What is included in the tuition? The tuition fee covers the workshop and materials. It does not include accommodation, meals or transportation.
Is there financial aid or scholarships available? CIID is not able to offer financial aid or scholarships for this program. However, funding may be available from your home country. It is your task to research funding opportunities.
What if one or more of my workshops are canceled for some reason? In the unlikely event that any of your workshops are canceled, we will offer you the opportunity to participate in one of the other workshops. If you decide to not attend an alternative workshop, we will refund you in full for the canceled workshop.
If I miss a day can I get my money back? We cannot offer a fee reduction to those who miss days for any reason, including illness.
Is there a discount for participants? Unfortunately, we are not able to provide a discount for the Summer School in Costa Rica.
What is expected of me?
How much interaction design experience do I need? None, some or lots. We encourage a multidisciplinary studio so we are looking for a diverse group of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. This approach enables peer-to-peer learning and interesting group discussions.
Do I need prior knowledge of specific software/hardware/electronics? Some applicants may already be experts in programming and electronics, others will have no experience at all. The idea is that skills will cross-pollinate across the group via teamwork and collaboration. If specific prior knowledge is required, this will be specified in the workshop description.
What kind of equipment should I bring? A laptop is required. The Summer School space will have WiFi access and a printer. You will have access to the prototyping lab, which includes laser cutters, 3D printers, soldering workstations and a selection of electronic components.
Am I required to be present every day of the workshop or can I explore the city? The program will be intense as there is a lot to learn in a short period of time. Irrelevant of which course you plan to attend, you will be expected to be in the studio every working day – unless another off-site location has been specified by the faculty. There will be a time in the evenings and weekends for socializing and urban explorations.
Does CIID cover health & safety insurance for participants? No. You are responsible for organizing your own insurance. This is important given that you could be using the fabLab and other machinery.
Summer School Interaction
Is there a Facebook group? Once you have paid your fee and created your profile, you will be invited to a Facebook group where you will be connected to other Summer School participants and faculty.
What is Airtable and how do I use it? It is a tool that will allow you to have a profile and see all information about the school. You will receive a link to your profile. Please take a look at this tutorial and download it to your mobile and your computer before the school starts.
What are other activities will happen?
You will have the possibility to mingle with participants from all workshops and there will be some joint social events in the evenings. From a team building perspective you will build close relationships with your peers – and of course, if you are doing multiple workshops, the weekends will be free for you to enjoy some time off in the capital city.
Cancellation
What is the Cancellation Policy? CIID will not refund workshops already paid.
In case a visa is declined or not issued on time to enable the participant to join the Summer School we will fully refund the fee upon receiving proper documentation stating the decline or delay.
What if one or more of my workshops are canceled for some reason? In the unlikely event that any of your workshops are canceled, we will offer you the opportunity to participate in one of the other workshops. If you decide not to attend an alternative workshop, we will refund you in full for the canceled workshop.
Will I get a refund in case I don’t get my VISA on time? Yes CIID will fully refund workshops canceled due to a delay in the VISA process.
Travel and Accommodation
What are the best flights? When booking your flight, you will need to arrive at least one day before the start of the workshop to check in to your accommodation.
Are flights and accommodation included in the fee? No, this should be organized and paid for by the individual.
Where will I sleep? There are a number of relatively cheap options available including hostels, AirBnB, and small hotels. We will provide participants with a list of these. It is up to the individual to find and book accommodation.
Can I share accommodation? This is up to the individual – we will set up a closed Summer School Facebook group for participants to get to know each other a little before their arrival in Costa Rica. Room/apartment sharing can be discussed in there. Groups of people have shared in the past by one person taking responsibility to book a large apartment through airbnb or similar websites. This is a great (and often cheaper) option.
This is a local travel agency contact that could help you with your accommodation and travel plans, this is an external party, therefore, we don’t take any responsibility and is not related to CIID.
