What is this workshop?

The ability to present your work is a big part of your work as a design practitioner. Whether finding a job, landing a pitch, or getting stakeholder alignment in a big organization, storytelling matters. This is an interactive course for all types of practitioners: we help writers, designers, and researchers frame their work and tell engaging stories. We do this by reconceptualizing the way that you think about reports and artifacts. We provide techniques to ensure that your audience is grounded in empathy, tangible examples, and memorable stories that emphasize the desired outcome. We will teach you to go beyond simple slides and basic videos, so that your story stands out from the crowd.

This is a hands-on course where you will put your learning into practice. You’ll complete the week with a refined storytelling experience, applied to a project or topic of your choice.

What will you learn?

  • How to gain influence in a business by putting together persuasive arguments that leverage different mediums (visual, video, photography, installations, etc.)
  • A way to get people into the experience of your process (whether it be research, writing, or design)
  • How to use research evidence meaningfully and persuasively
  • How to apply techniques that help people remember the information you share
  • How to deliver speeches or talks that get people excited about your work

How will you learn it?

  • Case study deep dives to establish theoretical foundations and bring in real world examples
  • Small group discussions to help you develop your own unique perspective
  • Group & individual exercises that will help you hone your approach
  • Instructor-led crit sessions that help you refine your storytelling style

Is this for you?

Yes! This workshop is for anyone curious about using stories to gain influence, set direction, and shape strategy.
