Description:

Are you curious to learn how to approach a thorny design challenge like human genetic modification or substance abuse? Are you excited to design for topics that are taboo or feel unapproachable like gambling or death? When the conversation is hard, a prototype is worth a thousand words.

Learn how to propel design forward by hands-on making instead of lengthy debates. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to approach a challenge by creating early, rapid, and speculative prototypes, ranging from provocative objects to video. Through a high-speed approach to design thinking, we’ll go from next-to-impossible challenges to tangible outcomes in just 5 days. You’ll learn how to iterate your thinking, and stay human-centred by gathering feedback on the prototypes – and how these techniques might apply to your everyday life.

Learning expectations:

Participants will learn

  • Fundamental techniques of Design Thinking
  • Identifying opportunities where design can have meaningful impact and how to turn those into concepts and prototypes
  • How to boost your creative process with rapid prototyping and decision making
  • Creative techniques such as role-playing, analogous inspiration, cultural probes, and guerilla interviews to get unstuck when it feels impossible
  • A variety of prototyping techniques (click-through screen prototypes, rough experience prototyping, audio/visual storytelling) to bring your concepts to life
  • How to use design to put tangible provocations at the center of conversations
  • How speculative design applies to everyday work and life

As designers, we have the ability to lead difficult conversations out of lengthy debate and into tangible, testable solutions. This course gives you both the tools and processes to move forward in creative ways.

Prerequisites:

None, but if you’re comfortable with just one of these it’s a great bonus:

  • Fundamental human-centered research techniques
  • Rapid concept illustrations (hand drawn or digital)

  • Basic skills with photography, audio OR video storytelling

And an appetite for provocative conversations.
