Norm y Morn

When the world was forced to shelter-in-place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, society lost many of its normal ways of expressing itself. If history is any guide, moments like this foster many new and unexpected forms of activity. Can the unexpected results of machine learning provide inspiration for new forms of interaction?

Norm y Morn is a generative musical companion consisting of a physical assistant and video app that enables people to work out and jam with their friends.

Morn is the physical assistant. By providing Morn with audio and video inputs, it can be trained to control any sound as an instrument with any form of movement.

Norm is the companion app. It allows people to hold remote jam sessions with friends by synchronizing video and audio feeds to provide an experience as if you were making music in the same room.

This project was inspired by the idea that the act of training a machine shares similarities with raising a child. Often children learn by mimicking the actions of adults but their imitations are rarely precise. Observing these unexpected imitations often result in magical moments to parents. Perhaps they can be magical with machines as well.
