smart.er – your personal energy broker

smart.er is a systems-level design concept. Its goal is to optimize energy usage by 1. shifting flexible demand to off-peak hours and by 2. measuring the energy use at home.

The solution consists of a smart home energy control unit (the box) and an app. The box connects both to advanced smart household appliances that connect via open standards such as Z-Wave and to legacy devices that can be controlled via smart switches. If available, smart.er connects to the smart grid infrastructure of the local energy provider to negotiate the best time to consume energy.

During this week long project, the team applied systems design methods for service innovation. Among the deliverables were a solution presentation, a UX video, a systems map, a service blueprint, and a sustainability impact assessment.

The design concept has been accepted in the ENEL Open Innovability challenge on Mass Customization & Inclusion.
