Mandala Music

Mandala Music game connects the visual patterns in the mandala to audio output. The users create their own radial patterns by pressing keys. The duration of the key-presses affects the size of the motifs in the mandala. A key-press causes the mandala to rotate, playing the pattern in a Euclidean rhythm.

Game Features

– Pressing ‘L1/a’ repeatedly allows the player to populate the inner mandala ring with circles. Each circle is introduced with a musical note.
– Pressing ‘L2/l’ repeatedly populates the outer mandala ring with circles. Each circle is introduced with a musical note, one octave higher than the inner ring’s note.
– Pressing ‘Play button’ rotates the mandala rings, and plays the respective notes when the circles on both rings cross the “play” stripe.

Mandala Music was created using Processing. The code in Processing sent out a signal using the MIDI Bus library, to create an audio output on Garage Band.

Future versions of this game could have the following features:

– Allowing players to generate as many mandala rings as they want
– Duration of the key-press to change the volume of the note being played
– Introducing another key that changes pitch
