There are so many weather apps out there. I thought if I was going to create another one it might be interesting to try out a new way of navigating them.

Instead of hamburger menus, floating action buttons, and flat design, Axis puts you in control of a little paper cut-out of the earth. The interactive elements are differentiated using motion jiggles, shadows, and texturing. It was interesting to see that GUIs can remain user friendly, even if they don’t follow the common trends of app design.

Axis was prototyped in Origami, allowing for fine adjustments to the jiggliness of the planet and the tension of the swiping gestures. The phone’s gyroscope is used to create a parallax effect that reinforces the paper-craft style.
