O2gether is blockchain-enabled service that empowers individuals with COPD to gain a sense of personal agency and ownership, and ultimately helps patients lead better lives. O2gether has 2 main components: Wearable device that gathers and analyses health data such as heart rate, body movement, etc. ; and a digital  platform, which enables local COPD community members to gather online, raise aspirations, and accomplish collective goals around various facets of COPD . The platform helps mentor, establish and monitor baseline exercises so as to provide the necessary feedback to the members and track contributions. Once a goal is achieved, the rewards are distributed based on individual contributions. This way O2gether provides much needed motivation to the COPD patients to continue doing their exercises by making them part of something bigger than themselves.


In partnership with Falck, the class focussed on developing new product or service interventions for COPD patients to help them better cope with their condition. Spread across two weeks, the first week was dedicated to understanding  users through desk and field research. The second week was focused on analysis, opportunity framing , ideation and concept generation.

The team focussed on opera singers (extreme user group) to understand  the importance of breath control as well as the motivations, tools and rituals used by the group to enhance and maintain their lung capacity. In-depth interviews were conducted with young opera singers as well as academics. These observations led to several crucial insights during the analysis phase. One key insight was around how a sense of higher purpose was required to keep on practicing breathing exercises. This and other insights  were then mapped to several opportunity areas. Concepts were developed around these opportunity spaces around 3 crucial directions: Guidance and Assistance, Sensory Feedback, and Collective Networking. Upon mutual discussions, the area of Collective Network seems the most promising. O2gether emerged out of this rigorous process of research and analysis.

A crucial learning of the class, was the importance of rigorous documentation during the entire design research process, especially when there are multiple team members. This helped the team capture and reproduce important details during the analysis and ideation phase that led to a better concept in the end.
