A common problem in open work spaces is the issue of beverages being accidentally knocked over. During the Materials of Electronics week, accidental coffee spills in the IDP work studio inspired the idea of creating a smart coaster, which sounds an alarm if an object or a person is too close to a beverage sitting on top of the coaster. No more spills, especially on electronic components.

The smart coaster has an infrared sensor and an Integrated Circuit on its circuit board which enables it to understand the distance of an object kept in its vicinity. It then turns on an alarm when an object is inside the range of the sensor. As the object gets closer and closer to the sensor, the sound of the alarm also gets louder.

The team placed the entire circuit board on a lego board and hid the electronic components to create a colorful and fun desk piece.
