The focus of the course was about familiarising ourselves with circuitry and basic electronics while exploring different conductive materials. We were asked to compose and perform an audio piece inspired by the work of John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen and with the conductive materials as the centerpiece.

We started off with small experiments into using different foods as conductive materials. Based on the water balance in each piece of food it would add a different resistance when completing the circuit and the pitch would change depending on that factor.

Based on the sound characteristics we chose a selection of foods ranging from sprouts to onions and bread and turned them into music instruments that we then jammed on. To this we added a beat from combining a bike light and a light sensor in a long cardboard tube.”
