Entropy Ceremony

The goal of this week was to familiarise ourselves with basic electronics and circuitry through an exploration of a variety of materials, including “soft” materials. We focused our exploration of these materials through sound; materials that can create, amplify or detect sound.

We were asked to perform a composition in our groups with sound objects made by us during the week using basic circuits and available materials. Part of the brief was to focus on the performative and expressive act as well as the sound aesthetics.

Entropy Ceremony

As part of our process, we started off with a number of small experiments. We played with different sounds and materials, including carbon conductive film, water and textiles. Using the individual sound machines we built, we improvised performances together before coming together on our final performance concept. Performed using ten distinct sound machines that either create or amplify sound, “Entropy Ceremony” starts quietly and reserved before declining into discomforting chaos and noise.
