The Head Companion

The Head Companion is an exploration of basic physical computing using an Arduino and a 9 Degrees of Freedom (9DOF) sensor. In this project, the 9DOF sensor is used as a controller for a robot head.

The 9DOF sensor is equipped with a triple-axis gyrometer, accelerometer and magnetometer, which allows it to sense free movement in all directions in space.

The robot head is built with laser-cut acrylic, styrofoam and servo motors. The sensor is embedded in a hat worn by the user, and the robot head mimics the user’s basic head movements. This gives the user an intuitive and responsive way of controlling the robot head with their own body, creating somewhat of an extension to their own body.
