Wise Choice

Food that is right for you and the environment.

“Wise Choice” is a service provided by the supermarket that makes people aware of their consumer behaviour and helps them choose products that are environmentally friendly.

It is for those who care about the environment but are not knowledgeable about their purchases and the impact they may have on the climate.

The service monitors each product when it gets delivered to the supermarket from the supplier. The system calculates carbon emissions and displays your environmental impact on purchase receipts and via an app.

When we enter a supermarket, we are bombarded with choices. Dozens of brands of what is essentially the same product beg for our attention and try to convince us that they are superior to the other. Are they really? And do these many choices help us in any way?

I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to mix physical and digital experiences. To follow my passion for social aid, I chose to explore the domain of food waste. Through intervention design, I wish to explore the impact of food waste on out health and environment.

Designing a service to alter consumer behaviour to stop or minimise food waste at the individual, supermarket or restaurant level.

I started scoping this domain into the area that can accurately define the problem and lead to a solution. I went out to do my user research on this area of interest.

The causes of food waste or loss are numerous and occur at the stages of production, processing, retailing and consumption. I looked into all the obstacle at all stages of food supply chain, did extensive desk research. Half of what we produced goes in the landfill, which gives rise to harmful greenhouse gases.

If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after USA and China. If we continue with business as usual, warming the planet further by the middle of this century, we could trigger runaway climate change beyond human control. What can we do with this information?

I started scoping this domain into the area that can accurately define the problem and lead to a solution.

All food waste >> 40% that goes to landfills >>impact that has on carbon emissions.

After many expert interviews, co-creating with the user and finding key insights I went out with many paper prototypes of different ideas and solutions. After series of build, test, repeat “Wise Choice” was introduced and I focused on building the concept and the app.
