Future, past and parallel motions

“Behind every man now alive stand 30 ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living.”
Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey

Working under the brief “Making the invisible visible” this particular project explored the concept of what might be and what might have been in the context of experimental imaging. The focus was laid on bringing past and future ghosts of an apartment to life.

Several scenes were created in an apartment to show combined parallel universes. Since the course emphasised the importance of exploration through trial and error, the project aimed to compose images through numerous iterations rather than simply taking photographs. One experiment inspired the next without any specific plan in mind. Various camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed, focus and iso were manipulated along with changing lighting conditions. Final images were composed in complete darkness with the use of time-lapse and harsh flashes.

The final outcome of these explorations in making the future, past and parallel motions of people visible is a collection of experimental images and three short stop motion videos.
