Wheel Record

Throughout this one week workshop we learned the basic theory and practice of electronics, focusing on components as materials to be incorporated into a larger construction. Pulling in techniques of textile craft we worked with conductive paints and fabrics in a series of one day building workshops.

For our final one day exploration we sought to deconstruct the variable resistance sensor to create a series of sensors that gave us precise control over our speaker’s sound. We created a musical scale by laying out the notes’ corresponding resistor values; ultimately cataloguing the sound properties of found conductive materials.

In the final construction we produced a series of musical wheels each embedded with its own melody. As the wheels roll down the ramp, the wheel edges contact separate conductive planes and play the resistors’ corresponding notes.
