Platonic Duo

This was our final exploration in the ‘Materials of Electronics’ course. Working with paper, fabric, thread and electronics our idea was to create two objects, one to sense touch and one to respond.

We created the two platonic solids using a laser cutter. The inside of the sensing object was covered with aluminum foil, making the surface act as a capacitive receptor. This was connected to the micro-controller for triggering. The responding object was painted with thermochromic paint. The inside faces were laid out with conductive thread and connected to the microcontroller via a battery and a MOSFET.

If a person touches the sensing object, the threads in the responding object heat up and create intricate patterns on its surface.
