Paper Robots

I wanted to explore the potential of using nitinol, also known as muscle wire, to build small robots that could explore their environment i.e attracted to light but being aware of the edge of a table.

Nitinol is a metal alloy of nickel and titanium. Nitinol has the ability that you can teach it a shape while heating it, and when you reapply heat to the wire i.e through current it will revert to the shape you thought it.

Unfortunately you need a lot of heat, and the wire that I had at my disposal wasn’t of a particular thick gauge and there for I couldn’t get the results I was hoping for. Another problem is that Nitinol isn’t as reliable as one would hope and you can’t get any consistent results.
