Topical Islands of Facebook

Topical Islands of Facebook is a piece of information design, based on the different between what Facebook users want and what they get. The visual inspiration is based on islands in a blue ocean, that each represent a category – or topic – of information found on Facebook. Each islands hillside expresses the gap between desire and reality.

The course in Information Design was divided into two parts: research and visualize.

With Facebook as the research area, we needed to collect interesting data that either told a story about ourselves or the world. I chose to focus on the relationship between users’ desired content and Facebook’s actual content. The research was based on a quantitative questionnaire and quickly showed interesting occurrences. For example do users experience 80 percent too many baby pictures, while seeing exactly the right amount of “food porn”.
