Memory of An Empty Space

Thirty spokes meet in the hub,
but the empty space between them
is the essence of the wheel.
Pots are formed from clay,
but the empty space between it
is the essence of the pot.

Walls with windows and doors form the house,
but the empty space within it
is the essence of the house.

People whispering loud
no tangible sense
body language
food for thought
this is the essence of the negative space

We keep looking at people around us in the streets and noticing how much space they perceive around themselves.
Is this the space needed to feel secure?
Does it still exist when we are next to ones we love?

We thought concentrating on outlines would help us to understand what it means to occupy space and assist us to illustrate without assumptions.

From the drawn negative shapes of our bodies we started exploring a “chaotic” puzzle with different shapes and pieces. Inbal often loses or misplaced  things. They fall, get lost or just vanish, but the frequency with which they come back to her is uncanny. This phenomenon was something that intrigued us and so we decided to explore it in our project.

We chose to create a scarf made out of the shapes of Inbal’s negative space of her body .
The shapes are made out of Memory foam and wool. We embedded magnets in them which allows you to connect one to another. This lets you create interesting shapes and multiple combinations for the scarf. The frailty of the scarf makes Inbal conscious about her “parts”, and so the dialogue between her and the scarf becomes two way.

The scarf shapes are currently dispersed throughout Copenhagen. We imagine they’re making their way around the city and we look forward to being reunited with them one day.
