Retro-fiction Interfaces

Student teams of three were given a photograph of an old machine interface (airplane control, multimeter, telephone operator) and were asked to make up a design fiction based on the apparent interface affordances. From the photo they redraw and physically reconstructed the interface using paper, cardboard, tape, and other simple sketching materials. The interpretation of the interface and the things that it controls/interacts with were acted out by the students.

Inspired by Matt Cottam’s CIID workshop 2009

Concepts explored: Affordances, design fiction, storytelling, tangible and graphical & tangible user interfaces.
