Sound Sign

Questioning the elements of identity that people create for themselves – clothing, signatures – or that they already have – like fingerprints, iris, DNA – the aim of this project was to visualise the uniqueness of peoples voices in combination with the very first thing they identify themselves with, their names.

By simply saying your name, Processing code records this analog signature and runs it for exactly 7 times – until the pattern is distinctive. At each run the amplitude of 1450Hertz frequency is taken and used for changing the shape, location and the colour of the pre-defined spiral form, thus creating a unique pattern for each voice of every name; resulting in a graphic representation of your name the way you say it.
