Anna Smeragliuolo

Nationality: American
Areas of Expertise: Telemedicine, Motion Capture

Anna is an animator and motion capture specialist with a B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of California Los Angeles. She has managed to combine her seemingly disparate interests in endeavors ranging from 3D molecular visualization to EEG performance art.

After working as an event production assistant (notable clients include: Kendrick Lamar, Uniqlo, Cynthia Rowley, New York Fashion Week, and Beyonce), she began work with the Department of Telemedicine and Virtual Rehabilitation at Burke Medical Research Institute, a rehabilitation hospital affiliated with Weill-Cornell medical school. She joined the lab as a motion capture specialist, but quickly became involved with many other projects, the likes of which include using VR to treat neuropathic pain, and the first large-scale NIH-funded nationwide telerehabilitation clinical trial. Her published work from this period can be found in PloS one and The Journal of Biomechanics.

Her current research focus centers on incorporating thoughtful design and improved visual literacy into the practice of science in order to broaden the dissemination of scientific understanding. She is interested in how the intelligent use of design in research and its presentation will change and inspire the future of scientific inquiry.
