Design to Exploit the Potential of UHP Light

The Client
Philips Lighting offers integral lighting solutions. They strive for continuous innovation and further product improvement to maintain its leadership in the market for a full spectrum of lighting solutions.

Approach
CIID was asked to investigate potential future uses for Ultra High Performance (UHP) lighting systems. The focus was on finding an alternative market segment and to demonstrate scenarios of how this technology could fit into a new role.

By using rapid and iterative prototyping, CIID explored the technical possibilities and limitations of the UHP system and subsequently translated these into values recognised as needs or aspirations for people.

Outcome
UHP lamps are primarily used for digital projection. They last many years, produce light brighter than the sun and are highly collimated. By exploiting these properties, a series of explorations that uncovered innovative new use cases and application areas for UHP lighting were created. These ranged from radical future vision concepts, to others that were grounded in the near future.
