Collaborating with Computers

In this joint Open Lecture Jen Sykes and Andreas Refsgaard will reflect upon their experiences as educators and creators when working with the computer as a creative partner. Focusing on the relationship between human and machine, the talk explores the poetic, random, error prone and often playful characteristics of this process. Taking tools often considered as means for functionality, they will discuss applying them to expressive outputs, opening up a dialogue around the materiality of computation within art and design.

Jen Sykes is a visual artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Alongside her practice Jen is a Lecturer in Physical Computing and Interactive Prototyping at the Glasgow School of Art. Recent work includes commissions for the BBC, Glasgow International Visual Art Festival and the NeuraIPS Art AI exhibition, Montreal.

Andreas Refsgaard is an artist and creative coder based in Copenhagen. His works have been published in New Scientist, Vice, Gizmodo, PSFK and Designboom, awarded by Interaction Awards and Core77 and exhibited in museums and at festivals in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

When: Tues. April 2nd 2019, 17-18.

Where: CIID, Toldbodgade 37B, Ground Floor, 1253 Copenhagen K.

Open Lecture: Scott Paterson

Monday, 18th Mar 2019

Possibility Hours

Possibility Hours is an ongoing civic engagement project. The project facilitates complex solutions for a society-centered city. We all have power to participate in and enact change in some way and as designers, we have a unique skill to envision possibilities that can ignite the imaginations of our neighbors.

To address local & global issues, I host political, economic, and social leaders who are neighbors but strangers. During our conversations, I immerse them in signals, trends, and forecasts and then facilitate an activity that reveals common possibilities for preferable urban futures.

In this talk, Scott Paterson, will share a recent project of his studio, Adventuring Ventures, that explores the future of the Gràcia neighborhood in Barcelona.

Scott Paterson is the founder of Adventuring Ventures. He brings over 20 years of strategic creative leadership, award-winning design, and mentorship across multiple disciplines, to help public and private organizations across the globe, to design participatory methods that tackle complex urban futures. From a decade plus of international consulting with frog and IDEO, to teaching at CCA and Parsons, or his participatory artwork in the Whitney Museum and Walker Art Center’s Permanent Collection, he is passionate about creating the conditions to realize work with great impact.

When: Mon. March 18th 2019, 17-18.

Where: CIID, Toldbodgade 37B, Ground Floor, 1253 Copenhagen K.

Open Lecture: David Sjunnesson

Thoughts on Data
Data is the buzzword of the century and has been labeled as the new oil. But what is it and more importantly how can it be used? In this talk, David will be musing about the implications of data on design and how we as designers can work with this material. He will pull from his experience at IDEO and hopes to facilitate an open discussion on the topic.

David Sjunnesson is a designer and maker working across industries. For 10+ years, he has helped build and elevate design thinking to an approach for problem-solving for all types of organizations, including startups, Fortune 100 companies, and non-profits. As Design Director at IDEO, he together with his teams, helps companies create new-to-the-world products and services, shape innovation capabilities, build brands, and rethinks how to work with data.

When: Tues. March 12th 2019, 17-18.

Where: CIID, Toldbodgade 37B, Ground Floor, 1253 Copenhagen K.

Open Lecture: Pierluigi Dalla Rosa

Tuesday, 5th Mar 2019

Design Exercises in Image Making

This open lecture is a reflection about today’s visual culture and about tools that allow designers and artists to create images. Pierluigi will present some of his work and he will contextualize it with references to image making methods and photography techniques.

The craft of image making is interwoven with mankind, from cave paintings to digital photography, and it has tremendous weight on how we remember moments, how we read information and how we communicate.

In this retrospective, Pierluigi will  highlight the craft quality of images, created with digital tools, and start a conversation about authenticity, artifacts’ “aura” and the power of image making in today’s society.

Pierluigi is a Senior Lead Designer at NIO where he is exploring the user experience for autonomous and connected cars. In his artistic and design practice, Pierluigi devotes time to expand his understanding of the intersection between digital and physical materials, most of the time with image making.
Pierluigi is a Cinema and Media Engineer by training, and, after having worked as graphic programmer in the early days of post-pc devices, he pivoted towards interaction design, attending the Interaction Design Program at CIID, where he learned to craft experiences that mix digital, natural and tangible elements.
When: March 5th 2018, 17-18.

Where: CIID, Toldbodgade 37B, Ground Floor, 1253 Copenhagen K.

Programming Design Systems
In this talk, design and programmer Rune Madsen will present his work in the intersection of graphic design and programming languages. The talk will focus on key concepts from his book Programming Design Systems, and how these same ideas influence the work of his company Design Systems International when creating dynamic identities, custom design tools, and design systems for digital products.
Rune Madsen is a designer, artist, and educator who use programming languages to create things with the computer. As a co-founder of Design Systems International, he specialises in code-based design projects including non-trivial interfaces, custom design tools, design systems, and dynamic branding projects. He is also the author of Programming Design Systems and Rune.js. He believes in simplicity, organized complexity, and that the pragmatic and poetic is inseparable.
When: Tues. February 19th 2018, 17-18.
